Puppies & Dogs

Simply repealing the breed specific provisions contained in the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 with no other changes may increase the risks to public safety, which HM Government is unwilling to do. Any changes to current legislation would require careful consideration to ensure that public safety remains at the heart of the regime. How we help Many of the dogs we see need urgent medical care, time, and training as we help them get used to humans, homes and other animals again. Every animal arrives at Woodgreen because someone could no longer look after them, or because they were found abandoned or stray. Big, small, pedigree or pooch, we’ll make sure they’re fit and well thanks to our onsite veterinary team and surgery. And if they’re shy, angry or scared, we’ll help them get used to people again and what life in a home feels and sounds like.

They can become confused and distressed if the behaviour of those people is inconsistent and unpredictable. If you have a comment or query about benefits, you will need to contact the government department or agency which handles that benefit. Don't include any personal or financial information, for example National Insurance, credit card numbers, or phone numbers. Getting your first dog is one of the most exciting things you will ever do! Exhibitors are reminded that postal entries for Crufts close on Monday 9 January and online entries on Monday 23 January for dogs which have qualified for the show.

You need to understand how big a time commitment your new dog will be. Will they be very active and require lots of long walks or will they need short regular bursts of activity? Dogs usually get on well with other dogs in the same household, but they may still need time to get to know each other when introduced. However, dogs will need to have their own space and places to get away from other dogs if they want to. For queries or advice about employment rights, contact the Labour Relations Agency. There’s hundreds of different breeds out there, and all have different needs. Some breeds are only suitable for certain types of homes too. However, no dog should routinely be left on its own for long periods as this can lead to behavioural problems that are distressing for both you and your dog. If you have a question about a government service or policy, you should contact the relevant government organisation directly. If you own or are responsible for a dog, and fail to meet its welfare needs or cause it unnecessary suffering, you may be prosecuted. With 221 pedigree dog breeds, finding one that's perfect for you can be difficult.

Under the 2014 Act, local authorities can also use Public Space Protection Orders to deal with a particular nuisance or problem arising in an area by imposing conditions on the use of that area. We recognise that some people are opposed to the prohibitions placed on the four types of  dog under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. However, HM Government must balance the views of those who want to repeal or amend breed specific legislation with our responsibility to ensure that the public is properly protected from dog attacks.

  • We recognise that dog attacks can have horrific consequences, and we take this issue very seriously.
  • If your dog isn’t neutered before you adopt it, you should consider having this done.
  • Protect your dog with UK's Number 1 pet insurer, with up to £15,000 cover for vet fees.
  • If you own or are responsible for a dog, and fail to meet its welfare needs or cause it unnecessary suffering, you may be prosecuted.
  • The person with whom you leave your dog will also be legally responsible for your dog’s welfare in your absence.
